The Village Apartments "Gems of Bequia"A Little About Bequia___ Know by sailors for many years, the Grenadines and the beautiful island of Bequia are being discovered by the traveler that seeks an uncommon experience. Bequia (pr. Bek-way) is blessed with some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean. The island is a great place to make friends from all over the world, go on a day sail, go hiking, diving, snorkeling, or just "lime" under a coconut tree with your favorite drink. Bequia means "island of the clouds" in the ancient Arawak. Bequia is the largest of the St. Vincent dependencies with a population of approximately 5,000. It lies 9 miles south of the mainland of St. Vincent and covers about 7 square miles. Bequia attracts quite a number of visitors, chiefly yachtsmen but also some smaller cruise ships and, increasingly, land-based travelers. The island is quite hilly and well forested with a great variety of fruit and nut trees. Wonderful bush hikes or walks to secluded beaches are available for the more adventurous. The main town is Port Elizabeth and Admiralty Bay offers a safe yacht anchorage. Bequia has long been a island of yachtsmen. Isolated enough to remain unspoiled, yet lively enough to offer something special for just about everyone. It provides a splendid combination of the old and new that so many find enchanting. You'll feel welcomed and it's easy to feel a part of the community. This acceptance brings many travelers back year after year. There are a number of un-crowded beaches that offer small beach bars/restaurants, as well as remote hike-in beaches. (sometimes you may have the beach all to yourself!)
